Torpoint was established in 1993 by equal shareholders Richard Metcalfe, Garry Cox and Robin Gravestock.
Richard Metcalfe: Contracts Director
With a construction background in site and contract management, spanning 36 years, Richard is responsible for the general management of all Torpoint contracts. He is highly experienced in contract managing internal and external refurbishments, housing enveloping, demolition and new build, extensions and decent homes projects in the public and private sectors, including the education, leisure and social housing markets.
Richard allocates resource and assists and supports the site agent on a daily basis for the duration of each project which involves constant communication with the Architect, Structural Engineer, Client and Main Subcontractors to ensure schedules are maintained and that all information be made available in time for our subcontractors and suppliers to deliver their services. To support this function Richard produces monthly site progress reports.
Richard also oversees company Health & Safety related information compiled prior, during and following the completion of the contract.
Richard actively promotes professionalism, commitment and pride in workmanship across the entire site team. He and the teams have evolved and continue to retain consistently positive client, user and subcontractor relationships with many references received from satisfied parties, praising Torpoints contribution, approach, attitude, professionalism, skills and quality of workmanship.
Garry Cox: Surveying Director
A time served quantity surveyor holding in excess of 30 years industry experience Garry is MCIOB qualified and is responsible for managing the overall costs of jobs. This includes the areas of purchasing, materials, interface with suppliers and subcontractors, managing bonus targets, submitting valuations and overseeing final accounts.
Garry sources all materials required for every Torpoint job and agrees the pricing for those materials. He recognises that a strong supply chain is a critical element of Torpoints success and has evolved the purchasing and supply chain relationships to reflect their importance. In order to enhance process efficiency and maximise cost savings Garry has set up formal accounts with all major suppliers and negotiated special price agreements for the purchase of materials. He also negotiates supply agreements and pricing with Torpoints major plant suppliers and builders merchants, so providing a key link in the relationship and interface between suppliers and site agents.
Garry has negotiated and set up supply chain management agreements with 17 key subcontractors and suppliers in order to maximise the benefits of the partnering ethos and to create stronger supply chain relationships.
With many close client relationships Garry also conducts his own jobs which involve estimating, surveying and working on site. Garrys jobs include an office refurbishment project (£1.2M,) the construction of a new commercial building in Featherstone (£750k,) the new build of 3 disabled persons bungalows (£450k,) a new build extension for Hartshead school (£300k,) a substantial extension and refurbishment project for Greenhead College (£1.9M), work on a Womens Domestic Violence project (£380k) and the refurbishment of an elderly care home (£350k.)
Robin Gravestock: Financial Director
An experienced, fully qualified (HNC Building) and time served quantity surveyor holding in excess of 30 years experience Robin is responsible for managing every aspect of Torpoints finances. This includes managing and overseeing cash flow, maintaining positive bank relationships, ensuring that Torpoint meet Inland Revenue and VAT requirements, compiling management accounts and working with the auditors on the production of audited accounts, ensuring that all insurance requirements are in place and managing all company creditors and debtors.
Robin has evolved and retained some very strong client relationships since Torpoints inception. For instance, Torpoint secured their first contract in 1993 from the Bradford based Architects Langtry Langton who continue to work closely and consistently with Torpoint on a variety of projects with Robin heading up the relationship. He continues to manage his own jobs which include conducting the estimating, surveying, material purchasing, costing, overseeing of subcontractors, working with site management and every other aspect involved in delivering a successful project.
Robins jobs include extensions and alterations to Eccleshill Swimming Pool (£1.7M,) the award of 5 independent projects across a 12 year relationship span relating to new build extensions, sports facilities and the internal and external refurbishment of Crossley Heath School (£1.2M,) new build extension for Rastrick School (£700k) and an extension and refurbishment to St Catherines school (£1.3M.)
David Joice: Senior Quantity Surveyor and Estimator
An experienced and fully qualified Chartered Quantity Surveyor
(RICS) with 35 years experience in the Building Industry and has a
Professional Quantity Surveying back ground, David has been with the
company for over 10 years since leaving Robert R Roberts Ltd in Leeds
following their take over by Morgan Sindall PLC in the late nineties.
He
has brought a wealth of knowledge to
the company and maintains a strong client relationship along with the
Directors. He has assumed the Estimating Managers role and conducts
negotiations on those Contracts where required. He also has had major
input into the negotiating of many contracts and has secured many jobs
with the likes of the Salvation Army & Medical
Centre Developments.
He also manages his
own Contracts from a Surveying point of view
at all levels on a variety of Housing, Commercial, Industrial, Education
and Medical Projects including the procurement of materials and Sub-Contractors,
Valuations and Final Accounts whilst working closely with the rest of
the Site Management Team.
